Description
Nos 95 and 97 High Street comprise two adjoining buildings, likely dating from the early 15th century. The frontages together measure approximately 60 feet. The roofs have a steep pitch and are tiled, with newer tiles on No 97. The front elevation is rendered with incised coursing, while the buildings are stone-built and feature a wooden moulded eaves cornice. Timber and brick are used extensively within the properties, particularly at the rear.
No 95 has a late 19th-century shop front with pilasters and fascia brackets, currently occupied by a Trustee Savings Bank. No 97 possesses an almost entirely glazed ground floor with Gothic-style glazing in five bays, one of which serves as the entrance. A substantial two-storey extension to the rear features tiled roofs; No 97 is constructed of brick, while No 95 is of stone.
The interior retains carved posts and door jambs from the 15th century. Rehabilitation work revealed reused 17th-century timbers within the roof of No 97. The ground floor of the central section contains a low archway with heavy moulded beams supported by moulded jambs and angle braces.
Nos 79, 81, 81A, 83, 87 to 103 (odd numbers) form a group, of which Nos 99 and 101 are of local interest only.
