Description
Nos 81, 81A, and 83 on High Street, formerly known as the Talbot Inn, are early 18th century brick houses that have been divided. They are low, two-storey buildings with high-pitched early tiled roofs. The first floor features five windows, with casements on No 81 and glazing bar sashes on No 83. The ground floor has two later shops; No 81 has a circa 1850 double bay window front with a central entrance and a heavy dentil cornice over a joint fascia. No 83 has a late 19th century double shop front, now with plate glass and a glazed central entrance, flanked by pilasters that support a fascia with a cornice. At the rear, there are two gabled extensions forming a courtyard. The extension of No 83 is made of diapered brick with a stone gable end and a high tiled roof with brick chimneys. One of the quoins of this building is marked with stone inscribed 'T.W.' over '1696', and 'E.H.' Nos 79, 81, 81A, 83, and 87 to 103 (odd) form a group, with Nos 99 and 101 being of local interest only.
