Description
This is a house, built around 1730 and extended in the 19th century. It is located in Prospect Row, Brompton. The house is constructed of yellow and red brick, with weatherboarded rear ranges, a brick party wall stack, and a tiled roof. It is an Early Georgian style building, with a double-depth plan and a rear range.
The front of the house is three storeys plus a basement, with a three-window front. It features a parapeted front with a low rendered plinth. The original doorcase is a notable feature, with rusticated pilasters supporting an entablature decorated with triglyphs, stags’ heads, and roses. A cornice projects forward above the pilasters, over a door composed of eight raised panels and two glazed top panels. The windows have segmental-arched heads, horned 6/6-pane sashes, and 3/6-paned attic sashes, all set in flush exposed frames. A 19th-century extension is on the north rear side, creating a courtyard with an east-facing range.
The interior is well-preserved and complete, including an entrance stair hall divided by a round archway. A fine Doric entrance leads to the front room, mirroring the front doorway's design with fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a dogleg staircase. This staircase has fluted newels, column-on-vase balusters, a ramped handrail, and a curtail, along with a round-arched stair light at the rear. A front ground-floor room features a stone fire surround with raised panels. Other interior details include six-panel doors, stone fireplaces, box cornices, and panelled shutters.
Attached to the property are cast-iron basement area railings with urn finials, and an iron handrail to the entrance. Prospect Row was built between 1705 and 1756, and this house is part of a good terrace of early to mid-Georgian houses.
