Description
Number 8 is a house located on Prospect Row in Brompton, dated 1708 by its owner and partly rebuilt in the mid to late 19th century. It features painted stucco with a brick lateral stack behind the ridge and a tiled roof. The house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic, presenting a two-window range.
The right-hand side has a round-arched doorway leading to a through passage, which includes a boarded door and a half-blind window above. To the left, there is an entrance with a thin surround and cornice, leading to a door with six raised panels. Additionally, there is a mid-19th century canted bay window with plate-glass sashes and a small flat-headed casement dormer. The eaves are adorned with a cornice.
Inside, the ground floor is panelled and features a central fireplace, along with a winder stair at the rear that has a curtail, turned balusters, and an uncut string. There is also a bay window seat.
The house is flanked by attached iron railings at the archway. Historically, the central archway and blind upper window suggest that this building was once part of a larger five-bay house that was cut in half. Prospect Row was constructed between 1705 and 1756 and is part of a notable mixed terrace of early to mid-Georgian houses.
