Description
The Boer War Memorial Arch at Brompton Barracks is a memorial arch built in 1902 by Ingress Bell. Constructed from limestone ashlar, it is designed in the Classical Revival style. The triumphal arch features matching front and rear sides, with a central round archway that is set forward. Attached Corinthian columns are positioned at the corners, supporting an entablature that is inscribed with the Royal Engineers' engagements during the Boer War. The archway includes a dentil impost band and a coffered soffit adorned with wreaths in the spandrels. The outer sections display lists of the deceased and relief panels depicting notable actions of the Royal Engineers. This arch is part of a planned group that includes the Barracks, the Institute, and the Crimean War memorial arch.
