Description

The Lecture Theatre at Brompton Barracks, also known as the Study Centre, is an early 19th-century building that was extended in the early to mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped slate roof, with a single-depth plan that includes a rear central lecture hall.

The exterior is two stories tall and has a window arrangement of 3:5:3. The central five-window section is set forward at both the front and back, featuring full-height round-arched recesses with lunettes and rubbed brick flat arches above 16-pane sash windows in the outer sections. A full-width extension at the front has wide pilaster strips leading to a cornice and parapet. The central doorway includes an overlight and double doors, while there is a round-arched doorway with a fanlight to the left side of the right-hand range. The left-hand side has a mid-20th-century plainer range with a central double glazed door.

Inside, the building has an entrance hall and a rear lecture theatre that features a right-hand proscenium arch, a left-hand gallery supported by cast-iron posts, a cornice, a coved ceiling, and moulded beams. Historically, this building is significant as an early example of educational facilities within a barracks and has group value as part of the axial arrangement with the other Barracks buildings and the Institute.
