Description
Abercwmboi Workmen's Hall and Institute is a two-storey building featuring a hall and an attached institute wing at a lower level. It is constructed from stone rubble that is coursed and rock-faced at the front, with ashlar dressings, while the right side is rendered. The roof is made of machine tiles and includes a ventilator and moulded ashlar coping.
The gable-end facade of the hall showcases a central tripartite Venetian-style window with a keystone and a continuous corniced hood, which opens onto a balcony. This balcony is supported by a projecting channelled double doorway that has an inscription above and part-glazed swing doors. The side bays are slightly advanced and marked by decoratively spaced ashlar quoins. The first floor features oculi, while the ground floor has small rectangular lobby windows with corniced hoods below. There are no windows on the right side, while the left side has windows with brick surrounds across two storeys, most of which have replaced glazing except for one original 6-pane sash.
At a lower level, accessible by a flight of steps down the slope, is the former Institute. It retains its main doorway, which has a deep round-arched hood supported by giant consoles on pilasters, featuring an inscription in the tympanum. There is a tall tripartite window similar to that on the hall's gable end, but with a moulded render surround. Other windows in the Institute are rectangular and paired, all with replaced glazing.
Inside, the entrance lobby has a boarded dado and stairs leading to the upper level on each side. These stairs feature decorative tripartite metal balusters and a moulded ramped handrail. The Institute, entered at the lower level, includes a suite of rooms such as a billiard hall and a former library, which has been converted into a bar lounge.
