Description
The Crimean War Memorial Arch and Gates, located at Brompton Barracks, was built in 1856 by Matthew Digby Wyatt. This memorial features a tripartite archway with keyed round arches, an enriched frieze, a cornice, and foliate brackets that flank a taller central arch topped with a raised inscribed parapet. The pilaster strips include inset inscribed panels and central roundels, while relief figures holding flags are positioned in the upper spandrels, and the soffits are coffered. The upper entablature bears the inscription UBIQUE, which is the motto of the Royal Engineers, along with QUO FASET ET GLORIA DUCUNT. The memorial also includes decorative bronze gates with wickets for the smaller arches. It is part of an axially-planned group that includes the Barracks, Institute, and the Boer War memorial arch.
