Description
St Ronans is a large house, originally built in 1900 as a private residence and later used as part of a school. It was designed by local architect G E Bond in the Arts and Crafts style. The building is constructed of red brick in stretched bond, featuring stone dressings, applied timber framing with pebble dashed infill in the gables, and a tiled roof with four brick chimney stacks.
The house is asymmetrical, with two storeys and an attic, and has irregular window placements. The south elevation includes a projecting gable on the left, which is timber framed with pebble dashed infill, and features a first-floor cambered sash window with stained glass. The ground floor has an integral hipped coach house. The right side also has a timber framed gable with pebble dashed infill, an attic casement, and a first-floor window with mullions and transoms, along with stained glass in the upper part. Above the doorcase, which has a round-headed door and a round-headed stone canopy with brackets, are the date (1900) and the initials (GEB) of the architect. The right corner of the building features an octagonal turret with a crenellated parapet and a lead dome topped with a finial. The north elevation has two pairs of cambered sash windows without glazing bars on the first floor, while the ground floor includes a five-light square bay on the right side, a cambered sash on the left, and an angled four-light bay at the left corner.
The interior is notably well-preserved and features elaborate floriate stained glass panels on the hall door, an oak staircase with scrolled tread ends, two turned balusters for each tread, and a newel post with a floral motif, along with coloured floor tiles displaying a floral pattern. The drawing room is adorned with a wide cornice and a fireplace with an eared architrave, pilasters, and high-quality tiled sides and hearth. The dining room features a brown marble fireplace, a ceiling with strapwork design, a deep plastered cornice, and a corner display niche. The morning room includes a fireplace with an oval paterea and pilasters.
