Description

Nos 153, 155, and 157 Eastgate are three former houses, now serving as shops, dating from the mid-18th century and having undergone considerable alterations. The buildings are timber framed with corrugated asbestos gambrel roofs, arranged in three ranges set end-on to the street. Each range has a brick stack on its ridge. The exterior walls are covered with applied plastered cladding featuring mock framing, replacing the original weatherboarding. The structure is three storeys high and has a four-window range on the front (1:1:2). All windows, except for the second floor of No 153, have flush surrounds and moulded cornices; all but the second floor of No 155 feature 20th-century replacement casements, while No 155 has a six-pane sash window. A wooden modillion cornice runs along the top. The shop fronts include a late 19th-century design for No 153, with a fascia supported by end console brackets, a 20th-century plate glass window for No 155, and a c.1900-style front for No 157, which extends into Almon Place. The right return shares a late 20th-century plate glass shop front with a glazed entrance to No 157A, which is not included in this listing. The rear of the building is treated like the front, featuring cladding and 20th-century windows. Despite the modern alterations, the building is included in the listing due to the surviving timber frame.
