Description
56 George Street is a building dating from around 1840. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of grey brick with red dressings. The parapet and cornice feature projecting red stretchers with grey headers, supported by dentils below. There are red brick bands between the storeys. The upper storeys have superimposed bay windows and a central blind window. The bay windows consist of three lights, are sash with later glazing bars, and have plain strips. They also feature weather-boarded aprons with saw tooth edges and friezes and cornices decorated with saw tooth patterns.
On the ground floor, to the right, there is an earlier three-light bay window, also sash but without glazing bars, which is flanked by fluted pilaster strips and has a cornice projecting to the sides on shaped brackets, along with a panelled apron. The left-hand window is recessed, sash with intact glazing bars, has a block sill, and is set in a plain rendered surround. The main entrance is slightly off-center and is accessed by two steps leading up to a panelled and glazed door with a semi-circular fanlight, all set in a moulded case. To the right of the entrance is a plank side door with a plain surround and a chamfered upper edge.
