Description

The Old Cross in the churchyard at John the Baptist Church is a Grade II listed structure, dating from the 15th century. It consists of four stone steps topped with a stone Celtic cross that was added in 1865. Historically, contracts were signed and declarations were made on the steps of the cross. The church registers from 1718 record that the Rector made "a declaration at the cross before the Church where the cows are milked." Additionally, it is noted that a fish market was held at this location when the land served as the village green rather than a burial ground.
