Description

The buildings at 13 and 15 Nelson Street are a pair of houses dating from around 1850. They are three storeys high with a basement, and built with cement-rendered walls, rusticated quoins that define the separation between the houses and mark the corners on the first and second floors. A string course runs along the front, and a moulded string on number 15 links the windows on each floor just below the window heads. A parapet and cornice with dentils, treated as a machicolation, tops the facade.

Number 15 features an inset bowed corner. Both houses have superimposed three-light bay windows on the first and second floors, with later glazing bars and shallow cornices. The aprons on the bay windows are boxed in, except for the first-floor apron on number 15, which retains traces of panelling. The ground-floor window of number 13 has a recessed sash with intact glazing bars and a block sill.

The front door of number 13 is recessed, panelled, and glazed, with a rectangular fanlight above. A flight of six steps leads up to the door. Number 15 has a tripartite, segment-headed window with sash windows and later glazing bars, set within a moulded arch that springs from the level of the string course. The windows in the bowed corner are set across the curve and are recessed casements of two lights with block sills. On the north side of number 15, there is one window on the first and second floors, and two segment-headed windows on the ground floor, all recessed with sash windows, intact glazing bars, and block sills. The lower string course continues around the front.

The central recessed door has narrow moulded panels and a tall, segmented arched fanlight, all set within a moulded segmental arch. A two-storey wing extends to the west, featuring a parapet and coping, square-headed recessed sash windows with glazing bars, and block sills.

Numbers 7 to 15 (odd) are grouped together.
