Description
The building is a workshop dating from around 1860 to 1870, now owned by the Southern Electricity Board. It is located along Rink Road, facing Monkton Street, and was originally part of the Old Ryde Gas Works. The structure features a vast hall that rises through two storeys, constructed of stone rubble with red brick dressings and a string course. The elevations are designed to resemble a chapel, with a gable and a corrugated roof. Each end has a red brick pediment that occupies the entire gable, featuring a large oeuil de boeuf window in the centre, surrounded by red brick. The front has three windows that are framed by rubble pilaster strips leading up to the pediment, with red brick dressings. These tall round-headed windows have closely set metal glazing bars and are topped with gauged red brick arches that include keystones. The north side of the building has modern windows, while the south side mirrors the front with three similar windows and rubble pilaster strips leading to a red brick eaves cornice. There is a low wing extending to the east, designed in a similar style but lacking windows on the north side.
