Description
The property at 24 and 25 Monkton Street dates to around 1840 to 1850. It is a semi-detached pair of two-story buildings constructed from coursed rubble, with a moulded sill course on the first floor and flanking rendered pilasters. Number 24 has a recessed entrance bay of one window, featuring rendered rusticated quoins. Number 25’s entrance bay aligns with the main block and rises above in three stories under a hipped slate roof, creating a tower feature with rusticated quoins to the angles. Each main block has three windows, with the central ones being blind. The windows are recessed, sash windows without glazing bars, set within broad rendered surrounds. Ground floor bay windows of three lights, with sash glazing, are present at each house. These windows are framed by Doric pilasters with a frieze and cornice above, and a panelled apron below the Number 25 bay. Number 24 features an enclosed porch projecting from the recessed bay, with a cornice and parapet to the front. Two round-headed side windows with rendered surrounds and keystones are also present. The entrance to Number 24 is a recessed modern door, flanked on the north side by a broad pilaster with paired triglyphs above. Number 25 has a recessed porch flanked by pilasters, a moulded arch with a keystone, a recessed panelled and glazed door, and a rectangular fanlight above. The properties form a group with Nos 18 to 25 Monkton Street.
