Description

This is a two-storey and basement house built around 1840 on Monkton Street, similar in appearance to number 19. It is constructed of stone, coursed to imitate brick, with rendered and painted rusticated quoins, a first floor sill course, and a plinth. The low-pitched slate roof has bracketed eaves, and there are three recessed sash windows, which lack glazing bars. The central recessed door has four moulded panels and a semi-circular fanlight with radial glazing bars, set within stepped reveals. A delicate wire trellis porch with a barrel-vaulted lead roof, curling eaves, and scrolled tracery spandrels above the front arch, sits in front of the door. Three steps lead up to the door, flanked by mid-19th century cast iron balustrades featuring the Anthemion motif. These balustrades connect to cast iron railings along the pavement, although some spikes are missing. The house is part of a group of buildings, numbers 18 to 25 inclusive.
