Description
No 13 Union Road is a warehouse and occasional coach house, dated 1875 and featuring the initials J C in a classical style. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with yellow brick dressings. It consists of a central section flanked by two projecting wings. The central part has a pediment with a modillion cornice, an oculus, and paired brick pilasters. There is a central round-headed arch that reaches almost full height, featuring a dated keystone and double wooden doors. Each side has projecting two-storey sections that are smaller in scale, with open pediments and paired pilasters, wooden hoists, and cambered loading doors on the first floors. The left side wing retains a cambered opening, while the right side wing has a 20th-century door inserted. Inside, there is a scientific queen post roof. Originally built as a warehouse for a firm of wine importers from Spanish vineyards, it was occasionally used as a coach house for the royal coach when Queen Victoria stayed at the Royal Squadron Hotel. Later, it served as a factory for making lemonade and other mineral drinks.
