Description
No. 116 High Street is a terraced house located in Rottingdean, dating from the 18th century. The building is constructed of flint with red brick dressings, some of which are now partly painted, and features a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with dormers in the attic and has two windows on the front facade.
The house has brick quoins and dressings around all openings. The entrance is flat-arched and features a doorcase with engaged Doric columns and an entablature. To the right of the entrance, there is a two-storey canted bay window. Above the entrance, there is a small flat-arched window, and on the ground floor facing Vicarage Lane, there is a segmental-arched window. The attic includes a dormer that also faces Vicarage Lane, and the roof is hipped with a stack, which is also located in Vicarage Lane.
Adjacent to the house in Vicarage Lane is a similar dwelling that shares materials and also stands two storeys with a two-window range. This building has shallow brick quoins and window dressings, along with a shallow segmental-arched entrance featuring a panelled door of original design. To the left of the door, there is a tripartite window with sashes that are of original design, and the first floor has cambered-arched windows with brick courses at the sills and original sashes. The pattern of the brick quoins on the front suggests that the eastern end may have been added later. There is a stack on the front wall with lower brickwork that has been rebuilt, and the roof is hipped. The interior has not been inspected.
