Mathematical And Physical Sciences I Including Staircase To South And East To West Wing Attached To East Pevensey Building

The Mathematical and Physical Sciences I building, which includes a staircase to the south and east and a west wing attached to the eastern Pevensey Building, is a physics building located at the University of Sussex in Brighton. It was constructed between 1960 and 1962 and designed by Sir Basil Spence. The building features red brick and bare, board-marked concrete, with timber frames for the windows and a flat roof.

The layout is a courtyard plan with a wing projecting to the east. The main facade, facing west into Fulten Court, consists of three storeys and eleven bays, designed as a 'giant order'. The windows are recessed behind projecting brick buttresses, which are topped by a projecting concrete cornice featuring segmental arches on the underside. The ground floor has an open arcade with segmental arched concrete lintels above, while the first floor windows are also topped by segmental arched concrete lintels. The rear north-south wing, which is attached to the eastern projection, is not included in this listing. The interior has not been inspected.
