Description

The Meeting House at the University of Sussex, built between 1956 and 1966, is a religious meeting house designed by Sir Basil Spence. It features red brick and bare board-marked concrete, with a conoidal roof covered in copper and a circular plan. The ground floor includes meeting rooms that are fully glazed and recessed, supported by brick buttresses that extend across the surrounding moat. The upper floor houses the chapel, constructed with board-marked concrete arranged in blocks, with multi-coloured glazing filling the gaps between them. The roof is irregular and cone-like, topped with a glazed aperture set on the diagonal, and includes projecting concrete gutter spouts.

Inside, the space is illuminated by a window-wall of coloured glass and retains original fittings designed by Spence. These include a square altar on a circular concrete pedestal, a lectern, a pair of readers' desks with concrete and leather seats, and timber sedilia, all elevated on a circular pedestal with three steps. The organ case features open decorative brickwork, and there are concrete and timber choir stalls. The Meeting House serves as an important focal point for the University campus.
