GV II*
University religious meeting house. 1956-66. Sir Basil Spence. Red brick and bare board-marked concrete. Conoidal copper covered roof. Circular plan. Ground floor containing meeting rooms fully glazed and recessed with brick buttresses which project across surround 'moat'. Upper floor containing chapel, with board-marked concrete, treated as blocks with an open bond, having multi-coloured glazing in the gaps between the blocks. Projecting concrete gutter spouts. Irregular cone-like roof with glazed aperture at the top, set on the diagonal. INTERIOR: lit by window-wall of coloured glass and containing original Spence fittings, including square altar on circular concrete pedestal, lectern, a pair of readers desks with concrete and leather seats, and timber sedilia, all set on circular pedestal 3 steps high. Organ case with open decorative brickwork; concrete and timber choir stalls. The Meeting House is an important focal point for the University campus.
