Description

The University of Sussex Library, designed by Sir Basil Spence, was built between 1962 and 1971. It features a combination of red brick and bare, board-marked concrete, with timber windows and a flat roof. The building is two storeys high, designed in a 'giant order' style, and includes a concealed basement. The main eastern facade, which faces Fulton Court, has 15 bays, with an off-centre entrance located in the 6th and 7th bays from the left. The facade is accented by projecting brick buttresses flanking the 3rd, 10th, and 13th bays. Vertical strip windows break up large sections of blind brick wall, and the returns also feature projecting buttresses. An extension to the north for the Institute of Development Studies is not included in this listing. The interior has not been inspected.
