Description
The Gardner Arts Centre at the University of Sussex is a university arts building designed by Sir Basil Spence, constructed between 1962 and 1966. The structure features red brick and bare board-marked concrete, with timber windows and flat roofs. To the south, there is a single-storey lecture theatre block with staggered walls and a tower made of paired slabs of concrete linked near the base, along with blind walls. The north side includes a courtyard surrounded by cloister walls on three sides, supported by segmental arches, with a pool on the fourth side. There are two-storey buildings to the east and west, and a four-storey range to the north, all exhibiting vertical articulation with strips of brick between the windows. The 1992 extension, known as Arts A, is not included in this listing. The interior has not been inspected.
