83, Gloucester Road

This is a mid-19th century terraced house, which may have originally been a public house or was later altered to become one. The roof is tiled, dating to the 20th century. The exterior is stuccoed.

The house has three storeys and one window facing Gloucester Road and one facing Over Street. The ground floor has a flat-arched double entrance in Over Street, sheltered by a bracketed canopy with ogee mouldings and a dentil cornice. A flat-arched entrance at the chamfered corner has fluted reveals. The corner is bracketed, and there are flat-arched windows on either side of the entrance, featuring reeded sills, fluted brackets, and continuing the dentil cornice. The upper floors have panels of rough render bordered by smooth stucco and pilasters at the angles. A storey band carries an egg-and-dart moulding across the full width in Gloucester Road, and half the width in Over Street. Decorative panels in Gloucester Road contain cartouches on the first floor and discs in a Japanese style on the second floor. A canted bay is positioned between these panels, and above the eaves features a semicircular pediment with sunburst details. Over Street has blank panels on the first floor, with a flat-arched window between them, beneath a swan’s neck pediment. A panel with griffins flanking a cartouche is located in the top right-hand corner. A coved cornice tops the building, which has a hipped roof. The interior of the property has not been inspected.
