Description
Brighthelm Church and Community Centre, formerly known as Hanover Chapel, is a Nonconformist chapel built in 1825. It is now part of the Brighthelm Church and Community Centre. The building is constructed of stucco, with a roof obscured by a parapet.
The exterior features two storeys over a basement and has a four-window range on the principal front. This includes a central two-window range flanked by two outer pedimented bays, each with one window, supported by giant Doric pilasters. There are flat-arched entrances to the outer bays under a prostyle Doric porch with an entablature. In the centre, there is a pair of Venetian windows in the Adam style, accompanied by Doric engaged columns. A storey band runs behind the pilasters, and the first-floor windows are square with eared and shouldered architraves. The outer bays have pediments, and the parapet is raised at the centre with antefixae.
The returns feature a two-window range to the frontispiece and a four-window range to the body of the church. The building underwent extensive rebuilding when it was incorporated into the Brighthelm Church and Community Centre between 1985 and 1987, and there are no interior features of architectural or historic interest. The listing applies only to the rebuilt chapel.
