Description
The monument to Amon Wilds is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas of Myra in Brighton. It dates from around 1833 and is likely designed by Amon Wilds himself. This stone tomb is situated approximately 75 meters east of the church's east end. It features a table-tomb topped with a large scrolled moulding that includes a shell niche flanked by paterae. The inscription commemorates Amon Wilds, who died on September 12, 1833, at the age of 71. It highlights his significant contributions to architecture in Brighton, noting that his abilities and taste transformed the style of local buildings from their antiquated simplicity to a more refined aesthetic, and praises his extensive genius, talent, and reputation for upright conduct. The monument also commemorates his first wife, Sarah, and his widow, Ann.
