Description

The monument to Martha Gunn is located in the churchyard of St Nicholas of Myra, approximately 3 metres from the south-east corner of the church. Dating to circa 1815, it is constructed of stone and takes the form of a coffin-shaped headstone with a footstone. Martha Gunn was a Brighton “dipper,” a woman employed to plunge bathers into the sea between approximately 1750 and 1814. She was the most well-known of these women.
