Description

Numbers 38-46 comprise a terrace of houses dating from around 1818, likely designed by Amon Wilds and Amon Henry Wilds. They are constructed of brick and stucco, with slate roofs, except for number 40 which has a tile roof and number 43 which has a turnerized roof. The houses are three stories high with basement levels and have dormers. The majority are one-window range designs, except number 43, which is two-window range. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication, with Nos 44-46 being an exception; number 46 notably features roughcast panels surrounded by smooth stucco. Steps lead to round-arched entrances, with fanlights above, the decorative glazing of which is notable on Nos 39-42. Original panelled doors remain at Nos 40-41 and 43-44. Full-height segmental bay windows with tripartite windows are present on the ground and first floors, although the windows on Nos 41, 43, and 46 have been altered. A sill band defines the second-floor windows. Number 43 incorporates a carriage entrance to the left, with a segmental bay above, giving it a double-fronted appearance. Original sash windows are preserved at No. 39 and on the first floor of No. 46. The cornices have been simplified on the round bays of Nos 38 and 40-42. A parapet with a balustrade tops the building, although the balustrade is missing on Nos 38 and 40-43. Dormers are set within a mansard roof. The interiors have not been inspected. Cast-iron railings with conical finials are present on the steps and area.
