Description
Numbers 57, 58, and 59 Regency Square are a group of three terraced houses dating to circa 1818 and likely designed by Amon Wilds and Amon Henry Wilds. The ground floors are stuccoed, while the brickwork above is painted, with No. 57 retaining its original brickwork. No. 57 has an artificial slate roof, while the roofs of the other houses are obscured by parapets.
Originally, the houses were intended as a symmetrical group, with a pedimented parapet to No. 58. They are flanked by full-height panelled pilasters. The ground floor features banded rustication and Ionic prostyle porches, with entablature elements missing on No. 58. The entrance to No. 58 has a round arched opening with decorative fanlight glazing, whereas the entrance to No. 59 has been replaced with a window. A four-story, almost full-width segmental bay with a first-floor verandah is present, featuring cast-iron railings; the canopy to No. 58 is missing, and that of No. 59 has been altered. No. 59 has blind boxes to the ground and second floors. A cornice-cum-sill band defines the third-floor windows, which are simplified on No. 57. Segmental-arched attic windows are set back beneath a segmental arch. No. 58 retains original sash windows to the second floor. Cornice and balustrade details are present; the balustrade on No. 57 has been reduced to a blocking course and dormers are incorporated into a mansard roof. No. 59 has been extended to a fourth floor, and No. 58's fourth floor is flanked by antefixae with a pediment displaying palmette ornament and rinceau frieze. Stacks are situated on the party walls.
The interior of No. 58 features a dogleg staircase with a turned newel, curtail step, wreathed handrail, stick balusters, decorated open string, and a dado moulding extending to the second floor; a secondary, simpler staircase is present above. Panelled doors to the ground and first floors have intricately moulded architraves with floral corner ornament, with the half-landing door curved to match the staircase’s apsidal plan; less ornate architraves are found elsewhere. A fireplace, plaster frieze, and ceiling moulding from the early or mid-19th century are located in the ground-floor front room. The interiors of Nos 57 and 59 were not inspected. Cast-iron railings with conical finials are located at the steps and area.
