Description

Cranbourne Primary School, built in 1870 and extended in the mid-20th century, is a single-storey school located on Lovel Road in Plaistow Green. It features red brick in Flemish bond and a plain tile gabled roof, designed in an E-plan layout.

The exterior includes a plinth, moulded brick sills, coved eaves, and brick quoins. The symmetrical road front has casement windows with glazing bars and gauged brick arch heads, with the windows on the front gable being moulded. At the center of the ridge, there is a two-stage bell tower with an ogee roof and weathervane, designed as a hexagonal structure with open sides and ogee arches, housing a bell in the lower stage.

The central section has an enclosed porch featuring a Dutch gable and a broken moulded brick pediment above a plain 20th-century entrance door, flanked by pilasters. An urn made of moulded bricks is positioned at the break of the pediment. Small windows with moulded brick arched heads are located on each return. On either side of the porch, there are two small windows with a tall window between each pair, creating a roof dormer with a panelled frieze and pediment. Each end of the building has a single bay gable with decorative timbers, and below each gable is a three-light window with brick mullions. The central window features a semicircular patterned light with radiating glazing bars and a dropped finial.

The school is enclosed by iron railings that span the entire width of the property, with a centrally located gate. The railings are plain with rounded tops, and the fluted iron gate posts have moulded heads.
