Description

Plaistow Green Farmhouse is a hall house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates from the late 15th century and underwent re-facing, re-roofing, and extension in the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 20th century.

The building features a timber frame that is partly encased in brick laid in Flemish bond, with dark headers, and has an old tile gabled roof. The plan is in an L-shape, consisting of two framed bays, with extensions at the side and rear.

The exterior is two storeys high and includes a platband on the front, as well as a similar band at the foot of the gable, supported by brick pilaster strips. There are two chimneys with corniced heads and clay pots. The windows are leaded casements from the 17th and 18th centuries, featuring segmental arched heads. The road-facing north side has a single bay gable that projects to the right, which contains three-light windows and one small blocked opening on the ground floor, along with a small blocked opening in the apex. The two-bay section has two-light windows and a half-glazed entrance door. There is also a late 18th-century lean-to extension on the right of the gable.

Inside, much of the timber frame is exposed, showcasing wide plain joists over the ground floor. The structure includes jowled posts and wide arched braces connecting the posts to the roof tie. The roof features a queen post design with clasped purlins. There is a large inserted brick chimney with a beam above it, and an early 19th-century cast iron fire grate located on the first floor. The windows and door at the front are fitted with folding panelled shutters.
