Description

The Old Hatchet Inn is an inn that has been converted into a public house. It dates back to the 16th century, with extensions made in the 18th century, and alterations occurring in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a combination of timber framing encased in painted brick and sections made entirely of painted brick.

The roof is made of old tiles, with parts that are gabled and half-hipped, while the 18th-century extension has a pyramidal roof. The oldest section consists of four framed bays, with extensions at both ends and at the rear. The building has varying heights, including sections that are single storey, one-and-a-half storeys, and two storeys. There are several chimneys: one on the right, a large ridge chimney that was rebuilt in the 19th century, and a very large weathered chimney at the rear, all topped with corniced heads and clay pots.

The entrance front faces southeast and is irregular in design. The central section has four casement windows on the ground floor and a plain plank door on the left. There are four gabled dormers with two-light casement windows. To the left is a lower single bay section, while to the right is a two-storey section from the 18th century that features a 20th-century enclosed gabled entrance porch and a coupled sash window. Additionally, there are two 19th-century sash windows in moulded wooden frames.

Inside, the ground floor boasts large moulded beams and a queen post roof with clasped purlins.
