Description

Bothy Cottage, located in the west and east yards north-west of Ascot Place, is an estate workers' cottage dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The cottage is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features an old tile hipped roof. It has a long rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall.

The exterior includes corbelled heads and clay pots near the ridge, positioned to the right of the centre. The eaves are dentilled brick, and the cottage has 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The ground floor windows have segmental brick arched heads. The entrance front faces north and has an irregular arrangement of four 2-light and one single-light windows on the first floor, while the ground floor features three 2-light windows at the right end, alongside a half-glazed entrance door with a moulded architrave, doorcase, and a bracketed hood with a moulded cornice. To the right of the first window is a door, and to the left is a pair of wooden plank doors with a segmental arched head. At the left end, there is a single wooden plank door.

The enclosing walls of the yard are 18th-century and also built in Flemish bond. The wall on the west side is approximately 2 metres high and has dentilled eaves and projecting brick coping, adjoining the cottage at the north-west corner. The northern end of this wall features a wide entrance with a segmental arched head and keystone. Adjacent to this is a small square agricultural building that has a platband, keyed oculus opening, dentilled eaves, and an old tile hipped roof, with a wooden plank entrance door on the east side.

The east yard is enclosed by 18th-century walls that are approximately 3 metres high, with an opening in the west wall leading to the west yard. The southern wall includes a gateway and is part of the East walled garden, which also includes gateways and an aviary. Bothy Cottage, along with the west and east yards, the Greenhouse Garden, the former cattleshed and yard, and the East walled garden, are all components of the kitchen gardens associated with Ascot Place.
