Description

Quince Cottage and Garden Cottage, located north-west of Ascot Place, is a building that has been divided into two houses for staff accommodation. It dates from the early to mid 18th century and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The structure is made of red brick with dark grey headers arranged in Flemish bond, topped with a hipped roof covered in old tiles.

The building has a double pile square plan and features two canted bays on the north side. It stands two storeys high and has two chimneys with cornice heads, one of which has clay pots. The exterior includes a tall, weathered brick plinth and oversailing corbelled brick eaves. The sash windows are fitted with glazing bars and have rubbed brick arches.

Quince Cottage, on the west front, is symmetrical with three bays. It has a central four-panelled entrance door with an overlight, framed by a moulded architrave surround and a flat moulded hood supported by two console brackets. This entrance is accessed by a flight of five stone steps with iron balustrades featuring urn finials.

Garden Cottage, on the east front, is asymmetrical with four bays. The three bays on the right contain a central 20th-century six-panelled door and doorcase with a pediment and a diamond-patterned overlight. This entrance is approached by a flight of four brick steps with stone treads.

The interiors were not inspected. Quince Cottage and Garden Cottage, along with Mulberry Cottage, form part of the eastern side of a stone-paved and cobbled stable yard. These cottages are reputed to be the original house at Ascot Place.
