Description

The East walled garden, gateways, and aviary, located north-west of Ascot Place, are features that were once part of a large kitchen garden. The walls and gateways date from the 18th century, with repairs made in the 19th and 20th centuries, while the aviary is from the late 19th century. The structure is built of red brick in Flemish bond and includes an iron aviary. The garden has a large rectangular layout, with gateways positioned centrally in the north, east, and south walls. The walls rise to approximately 3 metres and have a coping made of bricks laid on edge. The north and south gateways are flanked by brick quoin gatepiers, which support a rubbed brick-arched opening featuring a keystone. Above the arch, there is a band of flints topped with curved brick coping. The gatepiers have moulded stone copings with ball finials, while the eastern gateway is similar but lacks the finials. The aviary is designed with decorative open ironwork, featuring a hexagonal shape and a two-stage ogee roof topped with a ball and spike finial. The East walled garden, along with the Greenhouse Garden and Bothy Cottage, is adjacent to the stable buildings to the north and forms part of the former extensive kitchen gardens and cattleyard associated with Ascot Place.
