Description

Ascot Place is a large country house set in parkland with a large lake and grotto, built in the late 18th century by Thomas Sandby. It underwent alterations in the early and late 19th centuries by A Mitchell and was reconstructed in the mid-20th century by F Scarlett. The house is constructed of yellow stock brick in Flemish bond and features a low pitch hipped slate roof with a double span.

The building has a square plan with a lower pavilion on each side. The central section is two storeys tall with a basement, while the pavilions are also two storeys. There are four large ridge chimneys with moulded stone cornices and clay pots. The sash windows have glazing bars and are topped with gauged brick arches. The south front is symmetrical, with the central section consisting of seven bays. It has a projecting plinth, a plain parapet with coping, and urns at the corners. The three-bay projecting centre section features a dentilled pediment and a prostyle tetrastyle Doric portico, which is accessed by seven stone steps with urns on the side walls. The entrance door is a half-glazed double door.

To the left, there is a single-storey link with a 20th-century panelled door leading to a three-bay pavilion, which is styled similarly to the centre section but lacks a pediment and has a central cupola with louvred semicircular openings. To the right is a similar pavilion, but it features three large 20th-century round-headed windows with radiating glazing bars.

The interior has mostly been remodelled in the 20th century and includes an open well staircase with four flights, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The open string has moulded tread ends returned on the soffit, with foliated spandrels. The staircase hall features dentilled and moulded cornices at each level, panelled walls, and moulded doorcases. There are marble chimneypieces in the ante-room, dining room, and sitting room.
