Description
The large workshop and adjoining cart shed at the rear of Barnside House is a 19th-century structure now used for storage and as a garage. It features a timber frame with sections that are tarred and painted wide elm boarding. The workshop has a very wide slate gabled roof, while the cart shed has a smaller roof of a similar style.
The building has a rectangular plan consisting of three framed bays with aisles on each side, and a two-framed bay cart shed that adjoins at right angles on the southeast. It is a single-storey structure. The entrance front faces southeast and includes a large five-light window on the upper level, supported by stout mullions and delicate horizontal and vertical glazing bars that create a grid pattern. Each pane of glass overlaps the lower section. On the lower level, there are two sets of large planked doors, with two two-light windows in between and a small planked door on the left. The cart shed projects from the left side of the building.
Inside, the workshop features a queen post roof with two sets of clasped side purlins. Long arch braces connect the beams and plates, creating a pattern reminiscent of a wheel's spokes. The cart shed has similar ties and struts on its open northeast front.
