Description

The Priory is a former rectory and house located on Church Hill in Binfield. It dates from the early 18th century and was altered and extended around 1820 to 1830, with further changes made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features an old tile hipped roof at the rear, along with a slate hipped and gabled roof at the front.

The plan is T-shaped, with the early 19th-century section on the east. The exterior consists of two storeys, with some parts having an attic. The building has several chimneys with offset brick heads. The east front, which serves as the entrance, has a brick plinth and a thin wood box cornice that is bracketed around the rounded west end, which forms a bay window. The façade has six bays, with the first bay featuring blind windows and a large projecting chimney between the first and second bays. The entrance is near the center and consists of a pair of six-panelled doors topped with a patterned fanlight under a segmental arch. A prostyle Doric porch with a heavy mutule cornice and panelled soffit is approached by six steps. The first-floor windows have blind boxes. The rear section of the house is now irregular, featuring two canted bay windows on the west front and some late 20th-century replacement sash windows.

Inside, the early 19th-century section includes an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The vestibule and hall have a Portland stone floor with a slate diamond pattern. There is a panelled round-arched entry from the vestibule to the hall, which has a patterned fanlight. Most rooms have moulded ceiling cornices and panelled window shutters. The front bedrooms contain early 19th-century cast-iron hob fireplaces.
