Description
Gardener's Cottage is located in Valentines Park and dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick gauged window arches and features a hipped slate roof. The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window front with 6/6-pane sash windows. There is a modern addition to the left that includes a new front door, and a plain return to the left side.
The interior has not been inspected.
Valentines Park was originally laid out as a formal garden in the early 18th century. Robert Surman, a banker and South Sea Company speculator, made significant improvements between 1724 and 1754, including the creation of a walled garden. The estate was acquired by Ilford Borough Council in 1899 and opened as a public park. Gardener's Cottage is adjacent to the already listed 18th-century garden walls and close to the listed dovecote. The cottage was likely reconstructed in the mid-19th century and has strong group value with this notable collection of garden buildings.
