Description
Steward's Cottage is a house built in 1923 by Sir Edwin Cooper for the Port of London Authority. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a plain tiled roof, showcasing a Neo-Georgian style.
The cottage is one storey high with a dormer attic and has a two-window range. The south front includes a gabled timber porch added in 1994, situated to the left of a nine-paned fixed window from the same year. There is a half-glazed inner door and a 6/6 horned sash window to the right, which has a tiled skewback lintel above it. The roof is tall and pyramid-shaped, featuring two hipped dormers fitted with 6/6 horned sashes and a truncated apex stack.
On the east front, there are two circular ground-floor windows and one dormer similar to the south front. The north front has French doors to the left, installed in 1994, which replaced the original door and side light. To the right, there are two 6/6 horned sash windows under tiled skewback lintels, along with two dormers as seen on the other elevations. The west front mirrors the east front but also includes two dormers.
Inside, the south door leads into the kitchen, which has two four-panelled doors and one S-panelled door leading into the living room. The remaining doors in the house are four-panelled. There is a closed string staircase featuring diamond balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail.
