Description
Townsend Cottages is a house, originally three cottages, dating from the early 17th century. It is a lobby-entrance house that was refaced in the 18th century and altered and extended in the 20th. The exterior is of red brick, incorporating both English bond and English Garden wall bond. The roof is tiled, half-hipped to the left, with two brick chimney stacks, one external. The building has one storey and attics, with three windows. There are three 19th-century gabled dormers with casements. The ground floor has a 20th-century triple casement on the left side, with two cambered-head brick arches above. A central triple casement is set within a cambered brick arch, and a 20th-century metal casement is on the right side. A 19th-century gabled porch is on the left side, and traces of a blocked doorcase are visible on the right. The right-hand elevation shows exposed queen posts to the gables and a mid rail. A 20th-century extension is located on the right-hand side. Inside, one ground floor room features a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops. Half of this beam is rough hewn and was originally hidden behind a partition. There is an open fireplace with a bread oven. Plank doors and wide floorboards are present. The first floor exhibits exposed gunstock jowled posts, and a queen post and through purlin roof.
