Description
London House, which includes London Cottage at the rear, is a tall three-storey building with a one-window front, constructed of red brick and featuring a hipped slate roof with boxed eaves. The upper floors have tripartite sash windows with narrow side lights. The shop front is notable for its Doric cornice, which includes guttae, triglyphs, and paterae, and it is returned at the left-hand end. The shop front also has enriched console brackets and finials on plain end pilasters, panelled stall risers, and central doors.
The three-storey rear elevation facing Albert Square, likely built in the 18th century, is made of rubble and brickwork, with sash windows set in flush frames and a boarded gable. Attached to this is a two-storey rear range known as London Cottage, dating from around 1600, constructed of rubble and boarding with massive central stacks, modern windows, and a porch to the left. The internal layout is interesting, showing evidence of the original roof structure and retaining main ceiling beams with broad joists. There is also a later and taller two-storey brick extension to the right.
The condition of part of the rear building is poor.
