Description
This milestone, located on the west side of the road beside the car park at Chessington World of Adventures, is probably from the late 18th century. It is made of square Portland stone and is set diagonally to the road with a triangular top.
The top of the milestone is inscribed with the distances to various locations: "ROYAL EXCHANGE 17 MILES/WHITEHALL 15¼ MILES/HYDE PARK 14 MILES/PARISH OF CHESSINGTON". The southeast face has the inscription: "TO SURBITON/3 MILES/KINGSTON/4 MILES", while the northeast face reads: "TO LEATHERHEAD/4 MILES/DORKING/9 MILES". The lettering is in plain capitals without serifs.
