Description

Monk’s Cottage is a timber-framed cottage dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, originally constructed with brick nogging and later incorporating rear additions. The roof is covered in pantiles. It may have initially been a lobby-entrance house. The ground floor has undergone significant alteration, obscuring the original front door. A central chimney stack is present, behind which is a sealed-off two-storey void that may have once contained a staircase; the current staircase dates to the 19th century. Visible in the gable ends, the roof construction features tiebeams, collars, and diminished principals with through purlins trapped between the collars and the principals. The chimney stack has two angle shafts. A lean-to extension is located to the left, and a two-storey, pitched-roofed addition stands at the rear.
