Description

The water tower, designed in 1909 and built between 1913 and 1921, was created by Clifford Smith for the London County Council as part of the West Park Hospital complex. Constructed of brown brick in irregular Flemish bond, with red brick dressings, the tower is six storeys high and has a Welsh slate roof. The design features narrow, eight-pane sashes set within flat red brick arches topped with tall, narrow keystones, and metal straps. At the top, corbelled balconies project, each with round-arched, small-pane glazed doors. The roof sweeps outwards. A tall, battered chimney at the southwest corner includes a central pilaster on each side, a stone cornice, and semicircular pediments below a stone, iron-banded top section. Ancillary buildings at the base of the tower are not of special interest. The tower’s interior houses three large water tanks with a combined capacity of 25,000 gallons, supported by a solid brick base.
