Description
The City of London Corporation Coal Duty Boundary Marker, dated 1862 on the rear, is a boundary post made of cast iron and painted white. It measures approximately 30 centimeters square in section and stands about 1.5 meters high. The marker features a moulded base, a chamfered shaft, a moulded cornice, and a short upper stage topped with a moulded cap and a pyramidal top.
On the front of the shaft, there is raised lettering at the top that reads "4 & 25 Vic/cap 4," which refers to the London Coal and Wine Duties Act of 1861, although it should correctly read "24 & 25" as the "2" is missing and part of the text is obscured by a broken end of a screwed-on plate. Above this lettering, there is a raised shield. At the bottom of the rear, the maker's mark is arranged in an oval format, stating "REGENTS CANAL IRON WORKS/HENRY GRISSELL/1862/LONDON."
This marker is one of two similar posts listed. It was previously listed twice under the parish of Epsom, but that entry was removed from the list on 2 May 2018.
