Description

The Former Head Post Office in Kingston-upon-Thames, dated 1875, is a three-storey building constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The main facade, facing west, features two prominent bays, with the right bay set forward. This facade is four window bays wide, displaying a 1:2:1 window arrangement on the first floor, and includes a doorway to the right topped with a stone lintel and a trefoil light above. The windows are adorned with stone lintels that have roll-moulded shoulders. The second floor showcases blue brick diapering. The building has a slate roof behind a parapet, which is gabled over the central bays, featuring the royal monogram and the date in the gable.

The left side of the right bay is angled on the lower floors and is supported by moulded stone corbelling. The left half of the elevation has four windows on the ground floor with shouldered arches. Above this, there is a two-storey, three-light window set in a two-centred arched opening, with a tympanum that includes a cinquefoil and dogtooth terracotta. The main entrance is located in a porch on the north return elevation, featuring a segmental arched doorway with carved monsters on the springings and a gable above. There is a later extension to the rear that is of little interest. The building occupies an important site at the corner of Eden Street.
