KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES EDEN STREET (east side) No 42, Former Head Post Office
(Formerly listed as Head Post Office, EDEN STREET)
II Dated 1875. Three storeys. Red brick with stone dressings. The main front facing west is in two major bays with the right hand one set forward. This is four window bays wide [1:2:1 windows on the first floor], with a doorway to the right with stone lintel and a trefoil light above.The windows have stone lintels with roll-moulded shoulders. On the second floor is some blue brick diapering. Slate roof behind a parapet, gabled over the central bays with the royal monogramme and date in the gable. The set-back to the left hand part of the right side is angled on the lower floors, with moulded stone corbelling. The left-hand half of the elevation has four windows on the ground floor. Shouldered arches. Above is a two storey, three light window in two-centred-arched opening, with the tympanum containing a cinquefoil and dogtooth terracotta. The main entrance is in a porch on the north return elevation with a segmental arched doorway with carved monsters on the springings and a gable above. Later extension to rear of little interest. Occupies an important site at the corner of Eden Street.
