Description

The Retreat Cottage is a late 16th century, five-bay timber-framed barn, with the two western bays converted into a dwelling. It features an old tiled roof, and the south face displays framing filled partly with brick and partly with plaster. The structure includes stout timbers with large arch braces supporting the plates and ties, as well as queen post roof trusses. The central south bay, which was formerly the entrance, is now weatherboarded, while the two western bays form the cottage. The open central bay serves as the barn entrance, and there are lean-to projections on the eastern bays. The cottage part has small leaded casement windows.
