Description

The barn at Park Corner Farm, located on Park Farm Road in Upminster, is a mid-18th century structure that has undergone some external alterations over time. It features a yellow and plum stock brick exterior with a red brick interior, a rendered plinth, and a tiled roof.

On the south front, there are later 20th century double doors made of sheet metal, accompanied by slender ventilator openings. The east end includes a loft opening, ventilators, and a lean-to wall to the north. The north side has a central porch with a blocked door and a former cattle shelter within the now-roofless lean-to. The west end has been fitted with inserted double doors made of timber.

Inside, the barn has a largely unaltered seven-bay layout with a queen post trussed roof. There is some later 20th century reinforcement to the roof structure across the porch extension, and the floor is made of concrete. The red brick walls of the interior, which are laid in English bond, date back to the time of the roof structure. However, the later refacing of three of the four outer walls in Flemish bond suggests an early 19th century phase of alteration. Much of the farm associated with this barn was destroyed by bombing in 1940, and the structural repairs to the barn occurred after this event. Overall, it represents a well-preserved example of a barn in its original setting on the edge of Greater London.
