Description
The footbridge located at the rear of numbers 52 and 54 The Grove in Upminster is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1765, likely designed by James Paine, who developed the Gaynes Park estate for Sir James Esdaile, the Lord Mayor of London from 1777 to 1778. The footbridge is constructed of red brick with wide lime mortar joints and shows evidence of an original rendered finish. It features a single span with a round-headed arch, standing approximately two metres high at its apex and three metres wide. The sides of the opening are adorned with banded rustication and splayed voussoirs above, although the central keystone on the north side is missing. The side sections taper and curve outward from the main opening. The south side is of a simpler construction, with its opening blocked using Fletton brick around 1938. The interior is groin-vaulted.
