Description
Haling Cottage, the headmaster's house for Whitgift School, is located on Brighton Road and dates from the 17th century, with 19th-century alterations. The building is two storeys high and features a tiled 'M' roof with a central stack on the east ridge. At the centre, there is a two-storey porch that has one window and a 19th-century tiled pentice canopy, supported by carved posts on three sides. The south elevation includes three sash windows, two dormers, and two 19th-century canted bays on the ground floor, with a small canted bay above the east window. The west first-floor window features Gothic tracery and a single sash in the attic. There are later additions to the west, including a mid-19th-century block with three bays and two storeys, topped with a hipped slate roof and bracketed eaves. The entire range is now roughcast.
